Setting up Palm Treo 750 for MMS over GPRS

I received these instruction from Virgin Mobile Australia to set up MMS on a Palm Treo 750. I believe that these instructions may be for WM5, as some of the steps are slightly different on my WM6 Treo.

Setting up the handset GPRS Settings

1. On the handset, tap on Start.
2. Tap on Settings.
3. Tap on Connections then tap on the Connection icon.
4. Tap on Advanced then tap on Select Networks.
5. Tap on New under the Programs that automatically connect to the Internet should connect using drop down menu and enter Virgin MMS.
6. Tap on Modem and tap on New.
7. In the Enter a name for the connection input box, enter Virgin MMS.
8. Under the Select a modem menu, select Cellular Line (GPRS) and tap Next.
9. In the Access Point Name input box, enter virginmms and tap Next.
10. Leave the Username, Password and Domain empty.
11. Tap on Advanced.
12. Select Use Server assigned IP Address.
13. Tap on OK.
14. Tap on Finish.
15. Tap three times on the OK button located on the upper right hand corner.
16. Tap on the X button located on the upper right hand corner, you will now return to the main screen.

Setting up the MMS Account.

1. Tap on Start.
2. Tap on Messaging.
3. Tap on Menu.
4. Tap on Options.
5. Tap on Advanced.
6. Tap on Manual.
7. Tap on Edit.
8. Enter 202.139.083.152:9201 in the MMS Gateway Address field.
9. Enter http://mms.virginvibe.com.au:8002/ in the MMS URL field.
10. Under the Network Profile menu, select Virgin MMS.
11. Tap on OK twice located in the upper right hand corner of the screen.
12. Tap on the X in the upper right hand corner of the screen.

Once you have configured the MMS profile turn the phone off for 5 minutes then turn it back on. When it loads back up send a small picture (less than 100kb) from your phone back to your own number. After you receive the picture your MMS will be setup and you will be able to receive from other people as well.

Enabling Virgin Internet connectivity on Palm Treo 750

These are the steps required to enable my Palm Treo 750 running Windows Mobile 6 to connect to the Internet using Virgin Mobile in Australia.

1. Start > Settings > Connections > Connections
2. On the Advanced tab, click [Select Networks]
3. Under “Programs that automatically connect to the Internet should connect using:”, click [New…]
   NOTE: The top setting is fro general Internet access, the bottom setting is for private networking, such as a work VPN.
4. On the General tab, enter the name as “Virgin Internet”
5. On the Modem tab, click [New…]
6. Enter “Virgin Internet” as the name
7. Select “Cellular Line (GPRS, 3G)” as the modem.
   NOTE: Do not select “Cellular Line”
8. Click [Next]
9. Enter “VirginInternet” as the Access point name and click [Next]
10. Leave the User name, Password & Domain fields blank and click [Finish]

Preventing files being converted to .menc files when copying files to Storage Card on my Palm Treo 750

If encryption is enabled, files are encrypted and have .menc appended to the name
File encryption can be enabled via Start > Settings > System > Encryption

Encrypted files cannot be read on other devices, or even on the same device if the device is hard-reset!

Thanks to Chris1974 it appears that “data encryption is enforced by a policy that is pushed with MS Exchange 2007 policies”

Chris also notes that encryption can be turned off  by setting the EncryptByDefault value = 0 under
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\StorageManager\Filters\E NCFilt

Configuring my Palm Treo 750 (after hard reset)

I recently had to hard-reset my Palm Treo back to factory default (following these instructions).

I decided to document all the things I’ve configured to set up my Treo (running WM6) just the way I like it.

To move the My Documents folder from main memory to the storage card
From this Post by TetterkT

1. On the Storage Card, create a “My Documents” folder
2. In the root folder, delete or rename the “My Documents” folder
3. Create a text file named  My Documents.lnk with the following content
   33#”\Storage Card\My Documents”

Incidentally, when installing from a .CAB file, when prompted I install all my applications to the Storage Card (to help preserve the piteously small main memory).

To set a sensible name for the device
Start > Settings > System > About > Device ID > Device Name

To have the clock always shown on the task bar
Start > Settings > System > Clock & Alarms > More

To control what is displayed on the Today screen
Start > Settings >Personal > Today > Items

• Date (Note 1)
• Messaging
• Calendar (Upcoming appointments, Display all day events)
• Tasks (High priority, Tasks due today, Overdue tasks)

Disable touch-screen whilst on a call
Start > Settings >Personal > Keyguard

• Auto-Keyguard: When power is turned off
• Disable touchscreen: While on call in Today Screen

Setup power-saving settings
Start > Settings >Personal > Backlight > [Battery Power | External Power ]
Start > Settings > System > Power > Advanced

Regional settings
I’m in Australia, but when WM is installing the only options are US, Canada, UK & Ireland, so I chose Canada, as that use dd/mm/yy date format and $ (dollar) currency.
To set for Australia;
Start > Settings > System > Regional Settings > Region = English (Australia)
To set for 24 hour time;
Start > Settings > System > Regional Settings > Time > Time style = HH:mm:ss
To set for unambiguous (3 letter month) short date;
Start > Settings > System > Regional Settings > Date > Short date = dd-MMM-yy
Restart device for changes to take effect

Installed applications (on the Treo)

• Total Commander (A better file explorer)
• Handy Shopper (A very good shopping list application)
• PHM Regedit (A registry editor)
• KeePassPPC (Password vault)

Supporting applications (on my Windows PC)

• Srego CE Tools (cePull is very useful; I create batch files to backup files from the Treo to my PC)

Notes

1. Tapping Date on the Today screen displays “Clocks and Alarms”, which is the quickest way to show the current time in an alternative time zone.

Preventing automatic data connection on my Palm Treo 750 (WM6)

I found that ActiveSync that was continuously connecting over my 3G mobile data connection. I only get 20MB/month data, so I’ve had to prevent WM automatically syncing.

This started happening once I had set up a connection to Microsoft My Phone and Google Sync (which emulates an Exchange Server).

This is how I’ve set up my Palm Treo 750 (running Windows Mobile 6):

ActiveSync
Menu | Configure Server

• Server address: m.google.com {using SSL}
• User name: my.name@gmail.com
• Password: MyPassword
• Save password [Checked]
• [Advanced] Conflict: Keep item on my device
• Synchronize: Contacts and Calendar {Tasks are not (yet?) supported by Google}

Menu | Schedule

• Sync during: Manually
• Send/receive when I click send [Unchecked]

Microsoft My Phone
Menu | Sync Schedule

• Frequency: Manual

Incidentally, MS MyPhone is one of the few Windows Mobile applications that has an Exit option (under Menu).

Fixing WMDC (Windows Mobile Device Center) error 0x80883001

I have been successfully using my Palm Treo 750 (running WM6) with Windows 7 for a few months.

One day I got the following error message:

“There has been a change made on your server that requires you to re-synchronize all items on your device. Please perform a manual sync.”

Support code: 0x80883001

To my knowledge, I hadn’t made ANY changes to my server. Not wanting to resynchonise all items, I Googled for possible solutions.

The most common solution was to toggle Advanced Network Functionality in “Connections | USB to PC”, but that didn’t work for me.

What did work was to modify the Mobile Device Settings in Windows Mobile Device Center

1. Reboot my PC and the Treo.
2. Run “Windows Mobile Device Center” (not wmdc.exe) from Control Panel.
   To see the “Windows Mobile Device Center” icon in Control Panel, change from “View by: Category” to “View by icon”
3. Plug in the Treo using the USB cable
4. Wait “Windows Mobile Device Center” to connect
5. Under “Mobile Device Settings”, choose “Change content sync settings”
6. Disable E-mail, Notes and Microsoft Office OneNote
   
7. For each of the other categories (Contacts, Calendar, Tasks, Mobile Favorites), click on “Sync Settings” and then [Save] each one
